Crafting a Social Media Strategy That Actually Works for Your Yoga or Fitness Business
Whether you love it or hate it - or like most of us fall somewhere in between, Social Media is here to stay.
Social media can be a powerful tool to attract new students, engage your community, and showcase your studio’s unique vibe. But without a strategy, it can quickly become a time-sink that feels like shouting into the void.
Here’s how to craft, develop, implement, and measure a social media strategy that works — one that feels authentic and grows your business.
But >>>>> let me be clear: POSTING THINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A STRATEGY!
Step 1: Craft Your Foundation — Define Your Purpose and Audience
Before you post another yoga pose or Pilates teaser, get clear on why you’re on social media and who you’re trying to reach.
Ask yourself:
What is the main purpose of our social media presence? (e.g. brand awareness, filling classes, building community)
Who are we speaking to? (new students, long-time members, or a specific niche like “busy moms” or “men over 40 who want flexibility”?)
What do we want them to feel when they see our content?
🧭 Action Step: Write a one-sentence purpose statement. Be specific.
Examples:
“Our Instagram and TikTok will inspire busy professionals to take mindful breaks through yoga and mobility-based movement.”
”Our Instagram will position us as the go-to studio in our area with the best teachers and the most variety of classes.”
“Our TikTok will showcase the community, fun, and connection you will find at our studio.”
Step 2: Develop Your Brand Voice, Visuals, Core Value, and Content Pillars
Social media isn’t just about what you post — it’s how you show up.
Define your brand:
Tone: Are you nurturing, funny, grounded, or empowering?
Visual identity: Consistent colors, filters, fonts, and lighting.
Values: What do you want to communicate beyond yoga or fitness — community, empowerment, self-care?
Create 3–5 content pillars:
These are the categories your posts will rotate through.
Examples for a yoga or fitness studio:
Education: Pose breakdowns, wellness tips, short sequences
Inspiration: Quotes, student spotlights, behind-the-scenes
Engagement: Polls, Q&A, challenges
Promotion: Class updates, special offers, events
Lifestyle: Nutrition, mindfulness, self-care
🧭 Action Step: Write your 3–5 pillars on a whiteboard or in a content planner. Every post should fit under one.
Step 3: Implement — Plan, Create, and Post Consistently
Build a realistic content rhythm:
You don’t need to post every day.
Consistency beats volume — always. I love a combination of scheduled, strategic posts, and in-the-moment more causal posts that you post in real time.
Start with:
Instagram: 3 posts/week (mix of carousel tips, Reels, and stories)
TikTok: 2–3 short videos/week (quick demos, behind-the-scenes, humor)
Workflow tips:
Batch create: Set aside one day/month to film and one day/week to schedule.
Use templates: Canva and CapCut simplify your process.
Leverage trends mindfully: Adapt trending sounds to your brand message — don’t force it.
🧭 Action Step: Choose your posting schedule and stick to it for 60 days before evaluating results.
BUT REMEMBER>>>>> every post should have a WHY and should support one of your pillars above.
Step 4: Engage — Build Relationships, Not Just Reach
The algorithm rewards interaction, but so does your community.
Focus on:
Replying to comments and DMs daily
Tagging students (with permission) and local businesses
Sharing user-generated content (UGC)
Using calls-to-action like “Save this for later,” “Tag a friend,” or “What’s your favorite pose?”
🧭 Action Step: Spend 15 minutes daily engaging on your business account — not just posting.
Step 5: Measure What Matters
You can’t improve what you don’t measure — but not all metrics are equal.
Focus on: (extra credit to create GOALS for each)
Engagement rate (likes + comments + saves ÷ followers)
Reach and growth rate (are new people discovering you?)
Click-throughs or conversions (are they booking, signing up, or visiting your link?)
Content performance: Which types of posts get the most saves, shares, or comments?
Specific content for NEW STUDENTS! Sell your Intro Offer weekly, speak to them on “what to know” and “what to expect” for my first class.
Use Instagram Insights and TikTok Analytics to review what’s working monthly.
🧭 Action Step: Create a simple spreadsheet to track metrics monthly and note patterns.
Double down on content that converts — trim what doesn’t.
It’s OK to repost or reshare something that worked well before!
Step 6: Adjust and Evolve
Social media changes constantly. Treat it like a living practice — not a fixed routine.
Every quarter:
Review your analytics
Refresh your visuals if needed
Test new trends or formats
Revisit your goals
🧭 Action Step: Schedule a 90-day social media review meeting (even if it’s just with yourself or your team).
Key Takeaways and Creative Idea
✨ Clarity before content. Know your purpose and who you’re serving.
📅 Plan your pillars. Structure brings consistency and ease.
💬 Engage with heart. Connection drives growth.
📊 Measure and adjust. Data shows you where to spend your energy.
Let your team or teachers do a “TAKEOVER” where they post on your account for a day and share behind the scenes, things they love, favorite poses and local businesses. PROMOTE THIS at least a week ahead of time!
Think about the ONE THIRD RULE: 1/3 of the time you sell, 1/3 of the time you are an expert in your field, 1/3 of the time you align yourself with other businesses and accounts that you respect and want to be associated with.
Now what?
To really make this a viable strategy, you MUST DO THESE 3 THINGS:
Document it all … not in your head, not verbally but on real paper or in real electronic format. You know how much I love an SOP >>> this is a BIG one.
Decide who “owns” this. Who creates, posts, tracks and is ultimately responsible for your strategy to meet your goals.
Create a cadence for measuring, reporting and sharing goals and metrics with your team. Accountability matters. Quarterly is fine.
Bonus Tip: The “Real-World” Filter
Before posting, ask:
“Would I say or do this in my studio, in person?”
If the answer is yes, it’s authentic.
If the answer is no, it’s probably just noise.
