How Do I Figure Out Who My Ideal Yoga Student Is? (Free 10-Question Worksheet)
Quick answer
Your ideal yoga student is the specific person your studio is best built to serve, and the fastest way to find them is to study the students who already love you. Answer 10 questions about their life stage, motivations, pain points, habits, values and hesitations, then give that person a name. Every class, promo and post you create after that has one clear person to speak to.
Why does a yoga studio need an ideal client?
A yoga studio needs an ideal client because marketing that speaks to everyone ends up speaking to no one. "All levels welcome!" is friendly, but it doesn't make anyone stop scrolling and think, "Wait, that's me."
I ran Twist Yoga & Pilates for 13 years, from 2013 until I sold it in November 2025. The promos, schedules and packages that worked best were never the ones built for "anyone who likes yoga." They were built for a real person whose life, schedule and worries I understood.
Knowing your ideal client makes every decision easier. When you know who you're talking to, you know which classes to add, which time slots to protect, what to put in your intro offer, and where to spend your (probably tiny) marketing budget.
Does an ideal client mean turning other students away?
No. Picking an ideal client doesn't close your doors to anyone. It gives your marketing a clear target, and the people who love your studio for other reasons will still find you. You're choosing who to speak to, not who gets to come in.
A real life example
At my studio, one of our ideal student avatars is:
Sally. Sally is a 53 year old mom of two high school aged kids who go to the local public high school. Sally works as a full time HR consultant. She loves to walk her dog and travel with friends. She played soccer in high school but as she has gotten older, she has found her cardiovascular capacity has diminished and she wants to build more muscle. She needs beginner classes in the early mornings and evenings that also challenge her and she can star to see results quickly.
What 10 questions help you define your ideal yoga student?
Grab a coffee (or a matcha, no judgment) and a notebook. Answer each question as specifically as you can. "Women, 30–50" is a start. "A 42-year-old nurse who works three 12-hour shifts and needs a class that fits her schedule" is a person you can actually market to.
1. Who currently loves your studio the most?
Start with who's already here. Think of your most loyal students, the ones who show up every week and bring friends. What makes them stick around? Your best clients are the clearest clue to who you should attract more of.
2. What stage of life are they in?
Note their age range and life stage: young professionals, new parents, empty nesters, retirees. Life stage shapes almost everything else, from when they can come to class to what they're willing to spend.
3. What motivates them to do yoga?
Is it stress relief, fitness, community, spiritual growth, or rehab after an injury? The reason someone walks in the door is the reason your marketing should lead with.
4. What challenges or pain points are they dealing with?
What problem does yoga solve for them? Maybe they can't sleep, their back hurts from sitting all day, or they feel lonely after a move. Pain points are the heart of great marketing (more on that in What's a "pain point" and why should I care?).
5. What are their lifestyle habits?
Where do they shop? What do they read, watch or listen to? What other wellness habits do they have, like the gym, meditation or hiking? These answers tell you who your natural partners are and what your content should feel like.
6. Where do they spend their time, online and off?
List the social media platforms they actually use and the local groups, events or businesses they frequent. This is where your marketing should show up, instead of everywhere at once.
7. What values matter most to them?
Community, sustainability, mindfulness, family, health? When your studio's core values line up with your ideal client's values, you get loyalty that no discount can buy.
8. How do they prefer to invest in their wellness?
Do they like drop-ins, memberships, retreats, workshops or private sessions? This one directly shapes your pricing and packages, so don't skip it.
9. What objections or hesitations do they have about yoga or your specific exercise style?
"I'm not flexible enough." "It's too expensive." "I don't have time." Write down every reason they might say no, because each objection is a message you can answer before they ask.
10. If you could fill your studio with ONE type of student, who would it be?
Now put it all together into one person. Describe their age, gender, occupation, personality, fitness level, schedule, spending habits and mindset. Be so specific it feels a little silly. That's how you know it's working.
Bonus: why should you give your ideal client a name?
Naming your ideal client turns a list of traits into a person your whole team can picture. "Mindful Mary" or "Busy Parent Paul" is much easier to design for than "35–45, stressed, values community." When a teacher suggests a new class, you can simply ask, "Would Mary come to this?"
How do you use your ideal client in your marketing?
Once your worksheet is filled out, put it to work with three simple steps:
Circle the top 3 characteristics that define your ideal client. These are your non-negotiables.
Use your answers to guide your messaging, promotions and class offerings. Your schedule, intro offer, emails and social posts should all be written for this one person.
Run the gut check. Before anything goes out, ask: "Would my ideal client notice this and feel like it's speaking directly to them?" If the answer is no, rewrite it.
This ties right into something I teach all the time: every intro offer, sale and promo needs a clear why, who and when. Your ideal client is the "who." Once you know them, the why and when get a lot easier to answer.

FAQ
What is an ideal client avatar for a yoga studio?
An ideal client avatar is a detailed description of the one type of student a yoga studio most wants to attract. It covers their life stage, motivations, pain points, habits, values and objections. Studio owners use it to guide class schedules, pricing, promotions and marketing messages.
Can a yoga studio have more than one ideal client?
Yes, but start with one. Once your main ideal client is clear, you can build a second avatar for a specific program, like a prenatal series or a teacher training. Each offer works best when it's aimed at one clear person.
How often should I update my ideal client avatar?
Revisit your ideal client avatar at least once a year, and any time your studio changes in a big way, like a new location, new class format or a shift in who's showing up. Your best students today are the best source of truth.
What if my current students aren't who I want to attract?
That's useful information too. Fill out the worksheet twice: once for who you have now and once for who you want. The gap between the two shows you exactly what to change in your schedule, pricing and messaging.
